Store more than just your car
The garage is too often an afterthought of home design. It’s not sexy. It’s a cavernous mess. But that doesn’t have to be your reality. Garage storage offers a wealth of customization possibilities, from garden tool organization to stylish sports gear depot and a tidy place to house your recycling. What needs organizing in your garage?
We ask a lot of our garages but we often don’t consider their design or style as important as the rest of our homes. Part of the problem is that they are tasked with so many diverse functions. The thought of organizing the space can be overwhelming.
Lawn care and garden equipment are easily tamed with custom cabinets, drawers, shelves and hanging arrangements. Tall cabinets lined with hooks keep big tools like rakes and shovels in line, while smaller cubbies, drawers and shelves can store hand tools, gloves, seeds, soil and fertilizers.
Sports gear benefits from similar treatment. Organize items by sport or season—golf clubs and gear goes into one cabinet, camping gear into another. Hang up larger items like bikes, skis and surfboards to free up floor space.
The garage is also a perfect location for a handyman zone. Consider a large flat work surface with frequently used tools hanging within easy reach. Under-counter cabinets add extra storage. Task lighting allows the hobbyist to work into the night. Install a small bar and a flat screen nearby and the space becomes an impromptu game-day venue.
Since the garage is often the most frequently used entry into the home, organizing the area around the door is a no brainer. Equip the area with a bench and enough cubbies, cabinets and shelves to accommodate whatever your family brings in. Add built-in storage bins for pet food and recycling to further reduce indoor clutter.
